The Best 14 Dog Breeds for a Family with Kids

3. Labrador Retriever

One of the most popular dogs in the world, the Labrador retriever is a gentle, playful, intelligent and easygoing breed that bonds strongly with its people. Labs love to play and have a short attention span, but they’re also affectionate and make good family dogs.

They’re also very good at learning tricks and commands. They do require a lot of exercise, but are generally quite calm indoors.

However, there’s more to temperament than just how friendly a dog is. Labradors can be stubborn and willful if not trained properly from an early age.

They can also become aggressive if not socialized enough as puppies or if they aren’t given enough exercise (and many Labs don’t get enough exercise because of their high energy level).

The Lab’s thick coat comes in three varieties: short, wavy or curly. If you want to own your own Lab puppy, you’ll need to find a good breeder who can provide you with information on how to care for your puppy and what kind of temperament he will have as an adult dog.
